Since grammaticalization creates grammatical formatives, the question for semantic and pragmatic aspects of grammaticalization is a question for the nature of grammatical meaning. This chapter is a cautious contribution to an answer. It is composed as follows:
- Since the goal of grammaticalization is the creation of grammatical structure, the entire issue of meaning dissolves, since pure structure does not in itself carry meaning.
- Grammatical meanings can be ordered in a set of functional domains of language.
- These include what have been called pragmatic functions of grammatical formatives.
