The head of a binary syntagma S (of any grammatical level from the stem upwards) is that grammatical unit in S that determines the grammatical category of S and, thus, its grammatical properties and external relations. The head may also determine the grammatical relations of its dependents in S.

Example: chair heads the noun phrase and determines number on the verb in The wooden chairs in the corner are finished.
