Motion (motio generis) is the change of the gender of an animate noun as a more or less productive inflectional process to designate the two sexes. It applies to animals () and human beings ().

Motion differs from derivation of a female term, as in lion - lioness, in limiting itself to the inflectional category of gender. The traditional term suggests the shift of a noun through the genders.
