Vowel weakening is a process which reduces the prominence of a vowel, especially by changing it from open to closed, from peripheral to central, from long to short or from tense to lax.

Examples: The German stems Urlaub and Urteil have /u/ under stress, but /e/ in erlauben and erteilen.
