Corresponding to the epistemic relation that the subject of the theory (the explainer) has with the object, there are three kinds of explanations in science:

  1. Logical explanation:
  2. Causal explanation:
  3. Functional explanation:

There are two kinds of functional explanations (cf. Dressler 1985:267f):

  1. Teleological explanation: holds for goal-directed behavior in purposive, conscious actions of individuals. Example: speech acts.
  2. Teleonomic explanation: holds for functioning systems without assuming conscious, purposive actions. Example: grammatical operations.
