The purpose of this section is to introduce and clarify a set of concepts which are presupposed by any theory of grammaticalization. These concepts are so general that they are presupposed not only by a theory of grammaticalization, but also by one of grammatical change, of grammar and even of linguistic activity. This is necessary because grammaticalization does play a fundamental role in linguistic activity.
