Linguistic methodology 13.06.2026

This is a collection of pages on various aspects of linguistic methodology. Some earlier texts written in German have been incorporated. The collection may one day become a systematic methodology.

Methdology is, in the first place, a field of epistemology and not seldom even equated with it. Its problem is: How does a scientific discipline proceed in order to achieve objective knowledge? However, the concrete answer to this question depends chiefly on the particular discipline meant.

The methodology of a discipline is guided by the ultimate purpose it pursues and based on the set of conditions under which it operates. A set of methodological principles tailored to these conditions is paired with a set of methods (German ‘Methodik’) by which subordinate goals are achieved.
