Let the task be to decide, for a given Geman verb, whether it falls into the category of sound verbs (a verb that designates a noise or sound). There are, inter alia, delimitation problems with verbs that designate (caused) motion and manipulation where these actions commonly produce noise.

Test frame 1: combination with the adverb lautlos ‘silent(ly)’ or geräuschlos ‘noiseless(ly)’:

Das Schnitzel brutzelte lautlos in der Pfanne.

Test frame 2: Proposition containing the verb to be tested is a complement to the perception verb sehen ‘see’:

^?Ich sah die Maus im Laub rascheln.

Ich sah das Schnitzel in der Pfanne brutzeln.
