Given that the object of linguistics is (a) language, the language in which linguistics is executed bears the relation of a metalanguage to its object. The expression ‘metalanguage’ may designate the language in which a linguistic text, e.g. an article or a web page, is written, importantly including its terminology. It may also designate a formalism which represents some aspect of the object language, e.g. its morphological structure or its meaning.
