A verb is benefactive iff it is derived from another verb by a valency increase which adds a slot for an actant in the role of a beneficiary, leaving the valency of the underlying base otherwise intact.
If the derivation amounts to expressing the beneficiary as a direct object irrespective of the underlying valency, then the latter is insofar not left intact, and the derivation is an applicative1 one.
Example: Svan:
Vano kors a-gem.
Vano house(ABS) ?-build
'Vano builds a house.'
Vano mica gezals kors x-o-gem.
Vano his son house BEN-?-build
'Vano builds a house for his son.' (data from N. Sumbatova)
