The devoicing of a sound is the process in which it becomes voiceless. Devoicing is often motivated by assimilation.

Examples: Engl. {hæt} + {-z} becomes [hæts]. The past participle of lat. nub-o ‘I marry’ is nup-tus ‘married’.
