Ellipsis (Greek, ‘leaving out’) is the omission of part of a sentence that is required by rules of grammar and understood although left unsaid. The process is conditioned by the (extralinguistic or linguistic) context in that only that part of the thought is expressed that cannot be inferred from the context.
Derivatively, ellipsis is a construction resulting from this process.
