A comparative correlative construction (or proportional comparative construction) is a complex clause [Sd Sh] which codes a proportional comparison between situations Sd and Sh which change on continuous parameters such that the value reached by Sh depends on the value reached by Sd.
The dependent clause Sd precedes the main clause Sh by default (, a), but may follow it (b).
. | The more I work, the hungrier I get. |
. | a. | Cuanto | menos | equipaje | lleves, | más | cómodo | será | el | viaje. |
Span | how.much | less | baggage | carry:SUBJ:2.SG | more | comfortable | be:FUT:3.SG | the | trip |
The less baggage you carry, the more comfortable the trip will be. |
| b. | Eso | resulta | mucho | más | difícil | cuanto | más | se | lo | postergue. |
| that | result:3.SG | much | more | difficult | how.much | more | RFL | it | postpone:SUBJ:3.SG |
That gets much harder the more it is delayed. |
The correlation between the two values may be coded by correlative pronouns of the kind ‘how much – that much’; but this may be reduced (), coded by non-pronominal markers () or omitted, in which case a simple conditional construction results ().
. | If I work more, I get hungrier. |
